board and batten siding

im ready to put new board and batten siding on my house - I'm not sure where I'm supposed to by the wood from though - a local saw mill? I know I want to stain it a certain color and I know how to install it just need to know where is the most common place to buy it.

I assume you are talking about rough sawn cedar or similar?? Any good lumberyard can supply you, but not big box.

Local woods--

David I don't know what local woods you have--I suggest that you check in at this saw mill forum and ask what local wood will make for a long lasting siding.

Buying from a local wood mill can save you some serious money.

And at the same time you're helping a local cutter feed his family:thumbup:

You just need to find out if there are local woods appropriate for your needs.

here is a link to a cutter that has a good list of small mills across the nation. Google saw mills Kentucky-see what turns up.

Rough sawn cedar or cypress are the norm. Pine could be used also. In this area we have a "specialty" supply or two that deal in these types of lumber. As stated above, you should check with a lumber yard as opposed to HD or Lowes. It will be less expensive even if it is a special order item....
