Best base type for formica top

People,

Am gonna build my own counter top. I heard mdf is better than partricleboard. Any advice? Also, thickness- 1/2 or 3/4? Im thinking 3/4 is a must 9I take it theres no such thing as 5/8 here, right?)

Thanks

The best would be underlaymant rated 3/4" plywood.
Partical board and MDF will fall apart if there's a water leak.
