Basement Wall

I am in the process of remodeling my basement. On one of the interior brick walls, the bottom part protruded out further than the top. The bottom has large granite stones for the foundation of the building, the top is bricked. So, I attached a half wall to the bottom that is 4 feet high by 8 inches wide. I am trying to find out if there is a name for this type of wall, and also any ideas for this wall. I have though of placing a 2 X 12 on top of the half wall for a ledge for books, etc. Or maybe installing built in shelves on top of the half wall. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Basement Wall

I'd go with the built-ins on top of the "knee" wall. The more storage you have, the better off you are has always been my thinking....
