basement stairs

I am trying open up my stairway going down to the basement. I have already cut the opening at the bottom I am just having trouble trying to plan for the railing that I will need to put up. I am having trouble figuring out how to plan. It's not very thick up to the existing wall and is all open. The picture attached is before I cut out wall. That part is down now

Post a picture of the current condition. You would plan the railing based on the situation you have now.

Not even close.
Will the staircase be with open or closed stringers?
What will the balusters rest on?
If any of this terminology is not familiar, look up, "stairs and hand rails" to see what each detail looks like , then post a picture of the one you want to do.

Basic stair rail components: newal post at the bottom, rail from that up to some terminating surfare or another newal post, balusters(vertical or aligned with rail) or something to keep kids from falling thru, and support the rail.
