Basement Stairs

How can i eliminate the squeaky, noisy wooden stairs leading into the basement before i carpet them. I was thinking of adding some blocking in behind the stairs from underneath if that would work, thanks.

If they are that squeaky they shouldn't be too hard to take up glue and reinstall unless they are mortised in type stairs. If they are you can cut wedges and glue both side of the wedge and drive them in the mortise to tighten the steps.

If there just nailed in place then why not just predrill and counter sink and add screws?
