Basement bathroom input

Hey everyone, we are in the planning stages of finishing our basement and would like input from everyone.

The location we want to put the shower only has a ceiling height of 6 ft, 9 inches tall. So After shower base, tile, ceiling, we will only have about 6 and a half feet in there. That is plenty of room for short guys like me, but anyone over 6 feet tall could find the ceiling height an issue. The shower will likely be 3ft X 5ft, so that is a good size, the height is my only concern.

Is this height going to be a problem?

Does anybody have any feedback? Good or othewise?

check with your building department in regards to finished height. some codes have a minimum requirement for height of 7' and at least 6'-8" in front of plumbing fixtures. your building department can let you know what your requirements are if any.

good luck!

Will do Gary.

Any thoughts from just a plain functional standpoint?

Are you measuring this height to the bottom of the joists, or are you under some obstruction (HVAC, pipes, etc.)?

Hey Beepster, I measured from the bottom of joists to the concrete floor. No other obstructions.

I just talked to local inspector. He said there isn't any issue if it is just a bathroom with a ceiling that low. Now if the entire basement was going to be at that height, we would have a problem.

So we are OK from a code standpoint. Any thoughts? Don't be shy.

Consider removing the concrete from the shower area and building a barrier free shower---with this you will not be adding any height from a pan---

3x5 is a nice sized shower---I would likely shrink the door opening down to 4 feet so a standard door could be used---

Good idea on the barrier free shower Mike. We have to move the plumbing anyway so some of the concrete is being removed anyway. I'll talk to the plumber on that.

OK, next issue. Since the ceiling is going to be quite low it is going to get wet. I doubt regular paint and drywall would last too long in that environment.

Any suggestions on what we can put on the ceiling above the shower that can handle that?

Tile it---I like the look and you will never be concerned with it deteriorating--

It's not hard to do---
