Backsplash edge interferes with old light switch
Just a quick question...

I'm installing a new tile backsplash in the kitchen and just noticed that the dual light switch/outlet that I have is located directly above the edge of the countertop. My backsplash it set to end right at the end of the counter top. This means the the edge of the backsplash will "split" the outlet in two with one side being in tile and the other side in painted wall.

So what should I do about this? Have the faceplate against the wall and cut the tile around it leaving the faceplace recessed into the tile and flush with the painted wall? (all the other faceplates are on top of the tile). Or do I put the faceplate over the tile leaving a 1/4" gap to show between the faceplate and painted wall which I think would look funny. Or do I need to relocate the wall outlet so that it doesn't intefere with the edge of the tiled backsplash?

Post a picture.

Moving it sounds like the best thing if possible. If not then...

Put the plate on top of the tile and put a strip behind the other half to bring it out to the same height as the tile.
You will need an extender ring for the box also.

Here is a pic. I'm thinking that moving the box is my only real option but I thought I better check for other options first.

hopefully not to hard to move it. That is your best option.

Get a stud finder and see where the studs are.

If the switch operates the room light I would consider moving it out of the tile field, pending stud issue mentioned by mae-ling. You may end up with room for a single gang but not double gang box. If so, move the receptacle into the tile field if it will be used for powering things on the countertop, or delete it if you never use it.
