Awkward room

Good afternoon. I'm a newbie to the forum with a question regarding my front room. I have a 900 sq. foot house with a large front room. The front door opens on the right side of a room that is 14 feet wide and 23 feet long. The wall opposite the door, which is the 1st thing you see, and also the only uniterrupted wall in the house, has panelling that was painted over before I bought the house. Currently, my cash flow is like the weather-bumping on zero. Does anyone have any low cost ideas for this wall?

How about drywall, your labor is cheap I'm sure...

Is there anything under the panelling? I once pulled off a paneled 'feature wall' and after filling in about 400,000 nail holes (the guy must have bought the economy box and felt obligated to use them all) had a nice wall.

I suspect it's the same plaster and lath strips that were common i the early 20th century contruction around here. I thought about filling the groove with spackling and sanding it down, then painting a faux finish on it to hide whatever imperfections remain . As for the drywall, I guess 4 or 5 panels of 4X10 would cover it.
