Another Hardi Lap Siding Question

On the starter strip it says to leave a gap for drainage if water does get behind the siding. How big does this gap need to be and what is the spacing between them?

Another Hardi Lap Siding Question

For a starter strip I rip a piece of siding into two inch (2") strips. I then cut these into three feet (3" or 36") sections and leave about 1/4" to 3/8" gap between these starter strips. In this area I was taught that this was more for ventilation or breathing purposes. I can't imagine how water would get behind properly installed lap siding. Thanks, David
