another dumb newbie. what sort of electrical updates for '65 kitchen needed?

So, we are purchasing a home built in 1965. We don't have a huge budget for the kitchen so I plan on keeping the existing layout, replacing the cabinets and counter and adding an island and replacing the floors. I'm trying to see if i can get a nice track light so I don't have to add any drops for lights. Is there some other electrical update I'm missing (GFCI outlets?) for a 1965 home? plumbing update? sorry if this question is not specific enough. The house has 100A circuit breakers. TYIA

There's no way anybody here can tell you. Depends on the current code where you live. Also depends on whether you're required to update the electric because you're remodeling - in many places you wouldn't be. I recommend you pay a licensed electrician for a hour of his/her time to check out what you have and make a recommendation.

I'm not sure if your outlets are all 3-prong or not, but in case they are not.....unless you have done a lot of electrical work I would recommend you do what I did.

1: Gut the kitchen
2: Have the electrician rewire the kitchen
3: Finish the kitchen
4: Have the electrician hook all the circuits to the panel

If the OP's outlets are not grounded, I would certainly agree with your recommendation. But there may be other issues only a local electrician would know about.
