Another basement remodel...
Hey Everyone!
I too am taking on a partial basement remodel in the coming days. I'm pretty confident that I'll be able to pull it off as I've framed and finished partition walls a few times before, but two of the smaller walls will be against the very old, very hardened, poured concrete foundation. I've never dealt with concrete before, and right now I'm thinking I just want to put up some furring strips and rigid insulation rather than framing a stud wall against it, but...

What is the easiest means of attaching the furring to the concrete? I was thinking of renting a hammer drill and using masonry screws, but is a powder actuated nailer easier? I've never used one and I'm wondering what the learning curve is. the concrete looks like a tough match.

if you are going to spend your time and effort to do it, why not doing it the best... do it with proper framing....

A lot of it depends on the age of the concrete. When it's not too old, I would shoot the furring strips. But when it's older it will chip out so bad that you will end up having to use a masonry drill and tapcons, a very slow process.

Using proper framing will allow you to install maximum insulation and use normal size electrical boxes for outlets. This is probably your best bet; you are just sacrificing a bit of real estate for the 2 X 4's.

i agree with all these, no need to just use furring strips when you could do a full frame. Due to some poorly placed sump pits, water lines, plumbing drops, etc. I only framed one wall against concrete - all the others have about 18" between framed wall and block wall
