yeah, they seal it. and then i sealed it. its just a spray in a can, something like furniture polish. and it does make the stone look much "deeper", almost 3D.
i cannot speak for all stones. but in those i have seen, sealing makes NO difference in the color. unless you use a tinted sealer, and idk if there even is such a thing, i have never heard/seen it before.
I was actually just looking at the new venitian gold granite and 3 samples I looked at were completely different from each other. I even commented about how I wondered if they were mislabeled but the vendor said no, that's just the way natural stone is, and you need to go to the warehouse and pick the slab. When I went to the warehouse, there were several slabs covered in blue painters tape in various sizes where people picked out the slab and they were marked where they wanted the cuts to be in order to get the veining in an area they wanted. I ended up going with quartz because it's more consistent and didn't want my wife to deal with picking out a slab and laying it all out...saved me lots and lots of stress!

granite is like RTA cabinets. in that the "name", is just that, a name. in other words. there can be a large block cut into slabs and sent to 10 different retailers. each retailer can name it what they want = the SAME stone can have 10 different names. of course that is not always the case, as in ubatuba(sp?)
