Advice on a fireplace remodel

I am trying to do some projects around the house and my fireplace has always been a feature in my house the bugs me. It starts about a foot below my ceiling and starts slanting outward. It is about a foot from the wall at the base. I am assuming like the the rest of the house it is plaster and lath surface over the fireplace.I am wanting to buils it out and make it a straight surface and create a board and batten pattern to reflect other areas of the house with this detail. Anyone have any suggestions on how I might go about doing this, while keeping the fireplace fully functional?

Advice on a fireplace remodel

You really want to change that?
I think it is a cool architectural element. Simple, yet unique and effective.
I'd be afraid by adding bulk to it you will make the room feel much smaller.

How about an example pic of the "board and batten pattern" you want to make it.

Is that wood or gas?

Advice on a fireplace remodel

It is a wood burning fireplace. I am in the middle of adding the board and batten in the bathroom. I hoping to reflect it in the fireplace remodel. I know I won't be able to butt the boards close to the fireplace opening due to fire hazard. I am wondering if their is a way to extend the bricks around the fireplace opening to be flush with the framing I will add to make it vertical. I have searched the web, but I haven't been able to find anything with advice or instructions to do this.

i'd leave it alone. it's much more unique than all of the generic houzz stuff you see a thousand times over. It has character! Maybe do a different paint color so you notice it's sculptural quality.
