Adding Backsplash as a Remodel

My parents are considering adding a backsplash over the kitchen countertops. Currently, the counters have a riser that is a few inches above the surface and terminates in a 1" oak trim. My mother would like to have backsplash tile that goes from the top of the trim to the cupboards. The wall above the riser is plain old drywall with latex paint.

Can I add a backsplash tile and stick it to the painted wall with mastic?

For the outlets and switches, do I just use longer screws to acount for the extra 3/8" or so that the tile and adhesive will add to the wall or do I have to pry the boxes out and move them flush to the new surface?

For a top-notch job, should I cut out the drywall, add cement board backing, and thinset the backsplash tiles?

What would be the industry standard?

Yes you can apply the tiles directly to the drywall. Use a premixed mastic. For the outlets to make them level with the tile use the plastic spacers behind the outlets. They sell them at the big box stores in the electrical aisle. Just tell them what you are doing. You will need longer screws when re installing the outlets.

you aint seen nuthin yet. room demo for the new kitchen is starting in about 1 month. it is a bedroom now. EVERYTHING will be new. the kitchen we have now, will be the dining room. one big(ish) room.
