I would check the woodworking forum. They are friendly folks and in theory would be able to answer all of those questions and then some!
I do know in order to round out the boards you will need a lathe. for something the size shown there you will need a big lathe. |

the dummy is not necessary. you can practice on a post to begin with.

Having played with the "wooden dummy" - years ago -
The one that I went after (And, it went after me!) - It had simulated arms and legs - it was on a pivot. I don't think it was designed for "trapping" - It was designed to teach you how to "dance", and increase your speed and reaction times! By "dance" - I mean light and quick on your feet. You could hit it - it could hit you back! I saw somebody deal with it (that had extensive, experience with it) - Too fast to even conceive of! "RF" (Make it out of Oak) |

ive never seen them on a pivot. the fixed ones are for practicing the motion of strikes and blocks which are very fluid and done at the same time.. which is the same motions for wing chun trapping. check youtube there should be clips of bruce lee or jackie chan using a dummy. both originally trained in wing chun

Wing Chun is name of the woman who invented the discipline..
Now I have learned this art but never got far enough to the level of getting to use the dummy. |

Curious to know where you practice Wing Chun? I live in Connecticut.
May I suggest that you do not build one out of wood and instead consider making the body out of schedule 80 PVC? If you use PVC, you can do this for $200 in materials where as wood will cost easily $800. The way they are constructed requires a very large lathe for turning, more than a few very expensive chisels and of course dust collectors. Unless you own a woodworking shop, they are very difficult to build by the average homeowner. |
