Default Wood Stain is a primer also?

I am totally a newbie.

Is a wood stain also a wood primer?

Do I need to prime the wood first and then put the wood stain?

A stain is like a dye, it is used to change or enhance to color of the wood. Depending on the type of wood you sometimes need to use a stain controller first to prevent blotching. If you are staining you generally don't use a primer because you are going to use a clear finish after staining.

The normal process is to first stain then use a sealer (AKA primer) then the top coats. With softer woods like pine you also need to use a pre-conditioner prior to the stain to avoid uneven staining as someone has just posted. but stain itself is not a sealer or primer and has nothing to do with the need for sealing the wood.

Some stains, Minwax in particular, also contain a sealer.

skipping the proper steps will only yield a poor job. But MinWax stains is at the bottom of the barrel, so maybe some do not care about quality.
