are wood spools an issue like pallets?

I picked up a couple of wood spools (like this one: http://pinterest.com/pin/229331805995147761/) to use them as a coffee table or side table or bookshelf/case or something. Are wood spools susceptible to the same issues as wood pallets (i.e., formaldehyde, e. coli, mold, bird/rat waste, insects, etc.)?

Never heard these were a major problem with most pallets but I guess if you leave anything out in the elements. Isn't e. coli foodborn though?

Obviously, bacteria can get into any open surface so if you plan to eat or serve food directly on these spool table tops you should cut a piece of glass for them or otherwise seal them.

It's earth-borne, like all bacteria. The human gut has thousands of various strains (types) of E. Coli present in it. It's a generally "good bacteria". But a few strains of e. coli are pathogenic and can make one ill, or dead. These are the strains which make the evening news.
