wood posts

Had a 6' fence put in with a small area that is 4'.

Just noticed that many of the supporting posts have cracks. Is this normal? I sure hope so cause I'd dread having to deal with the fence contractor if it's not normal. I didn't notice it, or even look, before paying him.

attached are 3 of the many posts with cracks.

Pressure treated wood is notorious for cracking, that is perfectly normal for PT lumber. Not saying it is pretty, but it is normal.

daniel,

Whew. Thanks. That's a big relief off my mind.

At my last house I had a fence but it was far away and I didn't look at it closely. This one section is right outside an access door so I view it up close every day.

It's called checking, some have it even when there brand new in the store.

Yup. Pressure Treated lumber does that.

Is it because it's PT or is it the nature of the wood species which is most often (always?) PT...which i believe is pine?

It's the Pine...On the West Coast the PT is mostly Fir and that kind of checking is rare. There's a budget grade of PT that's usually Hemlock that will twist and check but nowhere to the extent I've seen with Pine.

This is a typical PT 4x4 we use out West treated with Copper Azole.

We get that checking in PT here in Florida too. Fence pickets look great on the pallet but a week or so on the fence and they are twisting and cracking.

The one I put up in my old back yard was cypress and didn't have any issues.

Mike.
