Wood beams cracking


My husband and I just bought a house that was remodeled. There are quite a few 8x12 wooden beams in the living room and the kitchen. One is cracked from top to the bottom but there are a few more that are not cracked all the way from top to bottom. Is this normal?

Post some pics would be really helpful as your description doesn't help to understand the situation: are these decorative beams (assume not), how long are they?, what kind of loads are they supporting?, etc...
