window measurement for shutters

Im measuring for plantation shutters for my home. i am finding that the measurements for one window has a length delta of almost 1/2 inch. In other words if i measure the inner right side of the window i measured 54". Inner left 54.5". When ordering my shutters do i measure with 54" length or 54.5" length?

Please advise. I would think the obvious answer is to measure with 54" length but then im a 1/2 inch short on one side.

Any tips on how to measure windows for installing plantation shutters for inside mount?

I assume that you are reasonably handy if you intend to install such things. What do you think about trimming shutters to fit? Do you think you would notice shutters that are slightly out of square? Do you live in some historic neigborhood where everything is already crooked, anyhow?

Are your shutters primarily going to be open or will they routinely be closed? If mostly open, I would probably opt for 54" shutters and leave as-is to avoid the out-of-square look. The 1/2" gap when occasionally closed would be no big deal to me. If the function of the shutters is a bigger priority than visual, then buy them 54-1/2 and trim to fit.

oberkc is right. Have you considered a cardboard template when you install them?
