when will rough sawn spruce start to rot?

hello, I just finished building my fence built primarily of treated wood, with exception of my fence boards which are rough sawn spruce. I intend to paint the fence to protect from rotting, but with winter fast approaching where I live I am concerned I may not be able to do any painting before winter. Would I be able to get away with one full winter season without painting it until next year? Or will the rough spruce begin to rot and will I likely be replacing some boards come next spring?

A lot depends on how the fence is built----If it gets very good air circulation you should be O.K. till spring--However of the end grain stays wet some softening of the wood will occur---

A semi transparent stain or solid stain will be better than a paint---Mike---

Spruce rots rather easily of it stays wet.

The problem will occur if the lower board ends are sitting in snow for long periods of time. Water will wick up from the bottom.
