When are nails better than screws?

I have to re-secure some 3/4 inch cedar siding to 2x4 wall studs. I am thinking of nailing the siding with ring shank because I fear deck screws will split the clapboard siding. The siding is 50 years old, has a 6 inch exposure and is face nailed.

Use stainless steel siding nails.

Steel or galvinized with turn the wood black.

joes right, the reason for using stainless is do to the oils in the cedar it reacts with galvanized nails

Pre-drill if you dont want it to split.

Many of the nail heads I see are black, so Yes Joe is right... .....
