What would you do? fireplace ideas

hi all!

i will be laying a hearthstone and putting up tile on the walls. thats a very broad statement, i know

i have some ideas of what i would like to do and how to do it. unfortunately with the cold weather around the corner, i'd like this to be a relatively quick project so i can start using the fireplace.

what type of material should i use for the hearthstone? how should i lay it and attach it? i like the look of glass tiles. im not interested in traditional wood surrounds. would like a single shelf mantle.

so, what would you do if this was your fireplace?

i'd love to hear some ideas from anyone.

was quite a change from what was there. they are just 12"x12" marble tile. We didnt like the looks of the old mantle and tile. was the first thing I replaced after we moved in.
the floor is brazillian tigerwood that I put down and finished myself. if you do a slab you could probably set in in thinset. hopefully someone that does that will come along. I used cement board and thinset for mine but I have wood subfloor.

If you are putting the hearth directly on the concrete slab than all you would need is thin set. If you have a basement or wood where the hearth would go you will need a concrete board. Hope that helps.
