Default what to support a reccessed shelf

On the partition wall I am setting up, I opened a "window" to have a reccessed shelf on one side. Basically, I will leave one side of the "window" open, without covering drywall, and the other side of the "window" covered. The window/recessed shelf is about 4'X5'.

Now the question is what should I use to add strength to the one sided open space? If I only use drywall on one side, people may just lean on the open side and break the drywall on the opposite side.

Thanks

Is this going to be one big open space? If it is, I would back the drywall with a sheet of 1/2" birch plywood.
