What is the purpose of 2x4 blocking between trusses?

This question comes up because I just re-roofed, and installed ridge vent. The ridge vent relies on an opening of about 4" along the ridge of the roof sheathing. Unfortunately, this opening is mostly obscured by 2x4 blocking that was toe-nailed between the engineered roof trusses, all along the ridge.

I need to improve ventilation, and the most straightforward way is to remove these 2x4s. Once the roof sheathing is nailed in place, I can't see that the blocking along the ridgeline has much of a purpose, but I am checking in to see if anybody has any different thoughts.

The house was built in 1996, if that makes any difference.

Can only think that the builder wanted to provide stiffness to the edge of the plywood. No other reason

well my knowledge is limited when it comes to the roof as most of my experience is interiors and decks.

but I'd wager that the blocking was used for bracing/spacing the trusses while they were sheathed and also like mrgins said as support for the plywood edge. the other seams probably have h clips.

I suspect The 2xs are there as either temp bridging or as horiz bracing. However the sheathing now acts as the bridging and I imagine the sheathing would also provide bracing (diaphragm). I suppose it's possible that the 2xs are acting as purlins, but I doubt it. What is the spacing of the trusses?

the trusses are on 24" centres

I managed to get in touch with a local building inspector today. He said much the same that you've said here, but advised to nail a 1x4 strap across the bottom side of the roof truss, then remove the blocking. Makes sense to me.

Before the folding spacers came out, we used 1x or 2x4s nailed on top of trusses to align them. They were taken off as the sheathing was nailed on. Not sure why the inspector told you to nail 1x4 underneath the trusses

The inspector may just want to make sure it's not a required lateral bracing, not likely if it's cut into blocking. I agree it's most likely just blocking for keeping even spacing of the trusses.

I think I'll go ahead with pulling that blocking out next weekend. Thanks for all your responses.
