What gauge finish nailer to rent?

I am installing tongue and groove tamarack on a ceiling. The material is nearly 3/4 inches thick. I don't plan on face nailing. I can rent pretty much any gauge nailer I need. I leaning towards a 16 gauge. I own an 18 gauge but I don't think it is beefy enough to hold the tamarack up tight to the ceiling. I am afraid of spitting too. Any advice or experience?

18 or 16 will work fine.. dabs of construction adhesive on the back will help too

agree, construction adhesive is a good idea and 16gauge would be better nail for this install.

That is two people saying I should use adhesive. Why? What could happen if I don't? Do you think the nails will pull through unless they have a little help?

No experience, but my advice for 3/4 material would be 15 or 16 gauge. I, too, think that 18 gauge would be too wimpy for this application.

If you skip the adhesive and it fails then what?
I can not imagine renting a trim gun, why not just buy one?

Hi, construction adhesive is quick solution to a much better job and in some ways will fill voids behind the material that's being put on the wall/ceiling. put a T&G board placement identifying line across the wall/ceiling so you know where to stop with the glue and not get the stuff all over everything. I worked with a clumsy guy that loved adhesive/caulk anything and had the stuff everywhere!

18 gauge nailers are used for this by production and precision guys all the time in conjunction with construction adhesive. once the glue cures thats all the holding power you need. just be clean with your work. keep a empty 5 gallon bucket right next to you which you hang the caulking gun on with hte gun to the inside any ooze out just drops into the bucket.. you can throw garbage in that too

theres no real weight to be hung off the panelling just the weight of material itself. for extra holding power with the 18 gauge you can cross nail
