what is the easiest way to prepare wall for stainless steel tile?

We have removed plastic bricks from backsplash, and have the grout/motar left on the wall. I was wondering what was the easiest way to achieve a smooth surface in order to apply 4x4 stainless tile. I was hoping there was a way to avoid the huge mess and dust of sanding itWould appreciat any help oir suggestions. IS there something i could apply?
