What is a "crib box?"

I'm reconfiguring our bathroom and am moving the toilet to another corner, which means getting the flange for the wasteline right on top of a joist...Since I have the floor completely open, someone suggested notching the joist and "building a crib box," to strengthen the joist I assume.

I'm looking for a photo/schematic of a crib box and basic description...can't seem to find one online.

thanks.

Four inches is going to make enough difference in your layout that you have to notch a joist out? Anyway, I've not heard the term crib framing in a long time. All it is is two boards layed parallel to each other the two more boards placed on the ends of the first prependicular to the first. Then you just repeat that pattern - building kind of a lincoln log tower box. If your just notching the one joist why not reinforce it with a 2 by on each side of the notch attached to the adjoining joists. So - 8 joist hangers and 4 sections of 2 by....

thanks...i should've been more clear that i was just interested in finding out what the term meant, not trying to do it. the guy who mentioned it is a retired remodeler/handyman, "old-school" you could say.

This seems to be what you're describing. But I'm at a loss as to the point of doing this......? Can you elaborate further on the use for this type of construction?

Is it just a stacked support for a weakened joist? What is the foundational support?
