What to cover ceiling with above wood stove.

Hello All,

I am refinishing the basement. At one end of the basement we have a big wood stove that really cranks out the heat. We love it.

I am currently sheetrocking the walls and will be sheetrocking the ceiling. I plan on placing the fire rated sheetrock in that area but thought I should probably use another covering as well. I was initially thinking about a tin ceiling with a little spacer between the layers.

Any other suggestions? What do you think would look good yet sensible?

Stephen

you might want to get some local eyes on advice. code requirements spacing required from walls etc. and local tried & true fire proof non-combustible coverings. fires are no fun...unless your a pyromaniac.

The stove should have a plate on the back that specifies approved clearance on all sides and top. Making a metal shield with spacers will reduce how much heat gets to the ceiling, but unless your ceiling is low, I don't imagine it'll be necessary.

I am up to code on the spacing. I am just looking for somethign that will make it have some character and look good. I was thinking that if I paint the ceiling, over time it will discolor.

Provided your flue clearances are up to snuff, I think your idea of a stamped tin ceiling would look pretty nice.
