Type of wood for exterior window frame

I am replacing a cottage window. The window itself has a vinyl frame, nailer etc., but I have to make it fit. The old wood will be removed and I will cut new wood for the frame. Where I am, spruce is the most popular, but is it a good choice for extreior wood frames and sills?
Thanks

pvc/fiber cement and Miratec have mostly replaced wood for exterior trim

Posting a picture would sure help.
And he's right unless your into wood rot, painting and priming, a man made product is the way to go.

Thanks. But the owner doesn't want to spend any extra and is planning to sell. The other windows are wood frame and painted. I agree ... if it were mine ... I'd go hi-tech but this isn't the case.
