Trying to get screws to hold in soft wood

I am hanging a bi-fold door. I have it all done, except that one of the screws holding a bracket to the door will not hold because the wood is too sot.
I have already tried a plastic anchor to no avail.
A larger screw didn't do the job either.

At this point, I know that the only thing that will work is a molly type bolt.
I need something small enough to go into a 3/8 hole and accept a #10 - 12 screw.
This cannot be the familiar wing type molly bolt, as I need it to go into a piece of wood that is only about 3/4 square.

Another possibility is inserting some sort of bolt into the frame of the door from the edge, then allowing a long screw or threaded rod to screw into it.

Whatever it is, I need something for the screw holding the hanging bracket to hold onto so it won't pull out.

Drill out the hole to accept a 3/8" dowel. Glue the dowel in the hole and drill for a screw. Make sure the dowel hole is correct size and the glue is good and dry (overnight).
