trouble with stair stringers

I love all the suggestions!

Ok so should the posts...newel handrail posts be bigger than the hand rails?

Reason why I am asking is my friend helping says just use a 4x4 doug fir for the posts as well as the handrails

I personally think I want the posts to be BIGGER! If you look at the photo, the posts are 4x6 or 4x8...just my opinion!

BTW Im paying for this so my opinion is the one that counts!

What are your thoughts?

there are strict building codes when it comes to handrail. Handrails are not to exceed 2-5/8" in width where I am from. They also must have at least 1/4" radiused corners for square rails. Check your local code. A 3-1/2" wide handrail is useless in my opinion.Way too big.

The rails in the photos don't show a 3 1/2" handrail

would use the 4x4 doug fir for the hand rails because they are handy...I had no idea they could not be that large..why is that?
