I just removed carpet that ran up the wall and refinished the hardwood floors. Around my door frames there is 1x4 oak that is squared off (not mitred). Will it look better to put up nice trim or should I just match up to the trim around the door. I do not want to remove what is already on the door frames. Thanks for the help
Correct. It is just a plain 1x4 that is around the door frame now. I am wondering if I should just use the same material or if I should use more of a decorative trim. Thanks, sorry for the confusion.
Well first thing and always is... consistency. Just keep the same type baseboard you have in other rooms in this one. If there is no consistency then use what you feel you may want to use in the future for other rooms. The most common baseboard here in New England is the 3-1/2 Colonial Base The pictures shows Oak but you can get the pine version at your local \lLumberyard. Don't go to the Box stores since they are more expensive (really!) and most times twisted/warped/bowed/orange/dented/dirty....you get the idea. They come clear pine or primed if your going to paint
So basically, you don't really have to use flat stock unless you want to stay consistent in that room only. Then just get some 1x5 oak (if your not painting) and stay consistent.Like I said earlier, match what's in the existing rooms first if all the other rooms have the same base. And if you do use clear oak trim, you can always ad a base cap (standard is the 1st one top left [FBC102] on the link)to spruce it up.
