Trim and Molding Questions

I'm installing new baseboard molding and trim with rosettes in my dining room. I haven't done this before so I have a couple of questions.

What is the tool I should use to install trim and molding?

Another question, should I paint the trim before I install it or after?

Hard woods like oak need to be predrilled when nailing, or use 15 or 16 ga. nail guns. If you are painting, I would prime all sides first, then paint once installed. You will have nail holes to fill, which should be done before painting. If staining, stain first, poly after installed. And don't forget caulk before finishing. Use a matching caulk for stained wood.

You can also paint you trim first, install, fill your nail holes and joints and then do touch up painting.
