Trim around a Brick fireplace

I need ideas for trimming around a red brick ceiling to floor fireplace. The other trim in the room is natural wood color. We think it would look nice trimmed out in a painted cream colored wood trim but not sure it would go with the other trim in the room which is on the windows and floor, no crown molding in this room. The mantle is made of bluestone.

Trim around a Brick fireplace

Just be sure to maintain the minimum required clearances from the firebox opening to wood. Oversimplified, if you keep the wood 12" away from the opening you've met the code requirement.

As for the appearance, you should post a picture. Once people can visualize the fireplace you'll get all sorts of ideas.

For starters, there are some clearance requirements when placing a combustible mantle above a fireplace:

Home Inspection: "A business with illogically high liability, slim profit margins and limited economies of scale. An incredibly diverse, multi-disciplined consulting service, delivered under difficult in-field circumstances, before a hostile audience in an impossibly short time frame, requiring the production of an extraordinarily detailed technical report, almost instantly, without benefit of research facilities or resources." - Alan Carson
