Tile Backsplash

I am not sure where to post this question, I thought here would be the best bet! I want to tile my back splash with ceramic tiles but there is painted sheet rock under my existing laminate back splash. Can I apply the mastic directly over the old latex paint? What if the old back splash peels off some of the sheet rock paper when I remove it, and leaves the gypsum exposed? Any suggestions on the best way to deal with these problems?

People apply backsplashes like that all the time. Not saying its right or wrong but it can be done. If the old back splash takes off some of the paper then just repair the damage.

Everything I state on this forum is an opinion I have developed based on my experience and research as a professional.
