What would be considered the best species of wood to use for a threshold?

We have made heart pine thresholds for one job, they fit with the house and will last a long time. Multiple coats of West System for the finish. Also made some from mahogany, poplar, and oak.

How much rain and sun will there be affecting the threshold?

The USS Constitution with 21" thick sides was primarily made from the now rare Southern Live Oak (in the "White Oaks" family) which was cut and milled near St. Simons, Georgia. It doesn't grow in the north but there are still small amounts in SC.
