support beam

What are the safest cross dimsnsions of a horizontal support beam that will hold up a 13 foot span along the first floor ceiling of a 2-story home with attic ? (no other columns). My friend wants to use 3 two by sixes of a medium grade wood and I believe it should be 1 four by eight, preferably of oak or red oak.

8 two by four posts across the middle of that half of the house, which we want to remove and substitute with one lateral support beam(s). Also, the 2nd floor "floor" beams run perpendicular to this, and only go half way, meeting in the middle of the house on top of the current cross beam (which of course doesn't hold weight but transfers the load to the posts). Our support beam will then have to hold most of the weight of the middle area of that half of the house, above the 1st floor.

Nobody here or anywhere on the internet can answer that for you.

You need to have a Structural Engineer do a on site inspection.
