support beam

I have a lake cottage that has an attached porch approximately 8x8. The only support are 3 4x4 posts underneath.
My question is what size beam should be used to properly support this.
I want to put a beam (2x6 nailed together across the entire length and then the support posts under that.
Will that be sufficient.
thanks

Hard to know what you're dealing with based on that description. Pictures? Sketch of plan?
