Suggestions on finishing on trim for stairs - photos

I am in the process of painting the inside of the house.
The last owner never really finished the trim on the stairs.
I am looking for some suggestions on how to make this look good.

Your skirt board is a little low but I use to install 1 1/8 inch base cap on top of the skirt board and under the landing tread (noising). On the outside of the stairs I would install stair brackets to cover the gap. Even then it isn't going to look professional as there are still somethings not right.

I think the trim on the ends of the stair tread is longer then the tread.

Any suggestions on the caps? Is this something I make? Or buy?

What level of quality are you looking for? If you want to pretty it up a little then do as jiju1943 suggested, but I have to say what you are starting with is a real hatchet job. To warrant the effort of working on it you will most likely want to replace the treads since those are too short and there isn't much room to add brackets.

on the top of the stringer I would add an 1-1/8" base cap moulding or you could just use a cove moulding like they put on the top off the treads (which tells me they did a bad job and covered it with the cove. There Also should be an open stringer for the risers to miter into but instead they were cut square and left a little long it seems. The only thing I can think of doing that may look ok is to add some tread brackets http://www.kinzelwoodproducts.com/kinzel/default.asp
