Stud Size Confusion

I'm redoing my basement from damage caused by hurricane Sandy. Basically I'm just replacing what was already there. I have a question about buying the studs for the walls.

I took the measurements of the studs that were already there and they measure 1 1/2" x 2 1/2". I measured a bunch because this seemed off to me. I've seen new studs that are 2" x 3". Did the existing studs shrink a half inch in length and width since they were put up? Or are they a size thats not really used anymore? Just want to make sure I buy the right size as a replacement.

Stud Size Confusion

Answered my own question. Didn't realize there was a difference between nominal and actual sizing.

Heres the link if anyone else is interested:

Stud Size Confusion

Original studs were made by sawing the lumber to size and referred to as rough sawn lumber. Modern studs are dressed for a smooth finish. They still saw them same size but then dress them making them smaller.
