Structural soundness of 4x4 pressure treated posts
My situation is this: I am a renter in a second floor flat. The outdoor back staircase is made of pressure-treated wood, including 4x4 posts. I installed a bike hook -- 3/16" screw that goes in about 2" -- into one of these posts.
My landlord called me today asking be to remove the bike hook because it was making the staircase "structurally unsound". She insists I attach the hook to a wooden fence (2x6" flats). My bike probably weighs no more than 30 lbs.
It is her building and her liability. - 4x4s an only wood and really not that strong, depending on the height.
Your bike may be only 30#, but someone else may try to hang a 1500# moose from it.
The owner has the liability and has no guarantee what will be hung from the hook or if someone slse installs a bigger hook or decides to run a horizontal line where there could be very large horizontal loads.
I am sure you could get permission to do what you want if you provide a guarantee what loads would be applied and assume the liability.
