Stripped screws in chair

Hello, I am new to the fix-er-up world so pardon my ignorance. I am repairing an old chair and the screws are stipped from their original holes. I need to use the same length screws but I need to put something in the old hole for the screw to adhere to. What should I use...I tried breaking off toothpicks and shoving that in the hole but that didn't work. Is there a product out there that I should buy that will harden enough to give that screw something to bite on to? Thanks in advance

Paul

Stripped screws in chair

Hi and welcome.

If the screws are out of sight, I'd drill through it a bit bigger, then wood glue/hammer in matching sized dowel, drill pilot hole in dowel and re-screw.

That is your best bet, just making new screw holes. Anything you put in the hole won't really adhere well to the wood, especially after you put a screw back in the hole
