Steel Dog

How 'bout an elementary answer to an elementary question for an elementary woodworker. What is the purpose/function of steel dog that moves up and down on the front jaw of a woodworker's vise? You would not believe how many people I have ask this question including seasoned cabinet builders and house builders, with no results.

This is my first time here and I just attempted to attach some pictures to this thread so you guys can see what I'm talking about --- I have no idea if they are attached or not and don't know how to find out.

Steel Dog

When the vise is properly afixed to the side of your woodworking table that also has a series of movable "dogs", you can lay a board between the two dogs closest to the size of the board you are working with, snug it up with the vise and work on a stable piece of wood.
Be it planing, sanding, etc.

Steel Dog

I understand what you're talking about Harry---from what you're saying the top of the vise jaws should be mounted such that the top of jaws are flush with the table top in order to utilize the steel dog properly.

Thanks a lot.
