Stairs- Carpeting against stringer/drywall

I am finishing my basement and planning on installing a molding between the stair stringer and drywall. I'm concerned how the carpeting is going to butt up on the end of the stringer. I can't seem to visualize it.

Of course my wife removed every bit of carpeting in our house

My question
Where and how does the carpeting end on the stringer??? Is it bound????
What type of molding should I use to close the gap between the drywall and the top part of the stair stringer????

You guys always come through

Stairs- Carpeting against stringer/drywall

I'm thinking your terminology might be off here. The stair stringer is the 2x12 that forms the structural backbone of the stair. The treads are what you step on (and what I think you're talking about). The risers are the vertical pieces between the treads. The skirtboards are diagonal 1x material that the treads and risers are let into, as opposed to butting the drywall.

If your treads and risers butt into the drywall without a skirtboard, you might consider a simple base cap moulding on top of a 1x2 to dress it up and give the carpet something to butt to. Base cap looks great on top of a 1x. You'll of course have tack strip at all the edges.

If there's no 1x skirtboard, these stairs are going to be a real nightmare to trim, as well as a challenge to keep the drywall/paint alongside the treads in good shape.

Pics would help for sure!

Stairs- Carpeting against stringer/drywall

Thank you for the info and advice. Here are some pictures.

Is that lip on the top of part of the 2X12 (stringer) called the skit board??

After I finish drywalling the walls and install the base cap molding on the skitboard- I am going to have someone install carpet.

When I have the stairs carpeted will they carpet the inside of that 2X12 (stringer)? Where will that carpeting end in relationship to the base cap molding??

The carpet will butt to the skirt board with no problem. It will kill below the top edge of the skirt board. (That's the 1" piece running the length of the stairs). The proper way to finish the top edge of the skirt board is, as mentioned above, with a piece of base cap which is available at your local material supply......
