Stair Trimming Questions

I removed the ratty old carpet from my basement stairs. the right side looking up is sheetrock and the left is painted, beaded knotty pine. The old carpet covered the cuts in the sheetrock and knotty pine. I think I need the reverse of a carriage board that fits down over the risers and treads. What is it called, please? The the bull noses on the knotty pine side of the stairs have already been notched square to 3/4". I will have to notch the bullnoses on the sheetrock side.

So--what are those kinds of boards called? What dimension lumber is used? How shall I describe the work for an ad on Craigslist or some other forum? About how long should it take to measure, mark, cut and fit? About how much should it cost assuming I supply the materials.

skirt board. The rest really depends on the skill level of the person doing the install.

If you are going to put in new skirts you might want to sand or replace you treads while your at it. Mention that you want to add skirt boards on both sides of a box stair. Mention that the stair is already built and that they will need to retro fit 1x10 or 1 x12 paint grade or pine skirts.

Thanks to both of you. The treads were covered in carpet. I am going to repair and paint the treads and risers.

Here is a link on how to cut a skirt board on existing stairs if you would like to give that a try.

Gonna Try It Myself

Thanks for the link. I also found a couple of links on the web. I am going to try to cut them myself. One question: Due to subfloor and tile on the top landing the rise of the last step before the landing is 9 1/2". The rise of the other 7 stairs is 8 1/4". (Please see pictures.) So, when I lay the skirt board along the edge of the treads it doesn't touch the bullnose of any of the treads save the first and landing. Any suggestions as to how to adjust for this?
