Stair Skirt Boards-Special Problem

The rise of the top step is a full inch higher than the other 9 steps. See Pics

So when I lay the 1x10 up the stairs to measure/template/scribe the skirt board there is a gap at each stair nosing except the bottom and top ones. Could someone here please tell me how to cut the top rise and run of the board to compensate for the greater rise of the last step?

Stair Skirt Boards-Special Problem

Time for new treads--or lifting and resetting the originals----

All treads must have the same Rise and run--and a stair nose that protrudes further than those---

I'll wait for one of the more knowledgeable members to give you the numbers---Mike----

You need to scribe it in.use a piece of 3/4" material and scribe to the top of it on the treads and to the front of it on the risers. You will have a smaller gate line at the top of the stair where the top rise is.

This being said, I would try to fix the stair rise issue first. This is more important than having a skirt...in my opinion

I can't take the old treads off. Pine panelling on the left and sheetrock on the right were installed after the treads. I could put new 4/4 pine treads on top of the old ones but what do I do with the bullnoses on the old treads?

The rise situation has been there for 25 years. I know its not the best.

Oh Mike and Millertyme: Thanks. I am replacing the treads on the stairs as per your strong suggestion. I have cut off the bullnose on all the treads and sanded the existing treads flush with the risers. How best to fasten the new treads over the old? I do have access under the stairs as they are basement stairs.

Now that you've decided to change the treads your best and fasted solution would be to get a Sawsall and cut out the stairs entirely. The rises are off so the carriages as they are now don't work and you are already incurring the cost of new treads.

Pick up 3 new 2x12's and cut new carriages. Affix a 2x4 to the outside of the wall carriages to allow for the skirts. Note that you now do not have to scribe the skirts. Install carriages and skirts, then install risers and treads. Use PL Premium or similar to attach treads to carriages. Doing this will save you hours in labor compared to attempting to rework what you have and will be correct when finished.

Keith is right. When it comes to stairs, sometimes what first appears to be more work ends up being less work in the end.
