We've lived in our home for 20 years....and it is about 35 years old. The 12 x 1 inch cedar siding has never been touched in any way.
We do not mind the "look".....but are concerned that we should be doing something to it, for its care. Should we??? Or can we just leave it as it is....35 years old, grey, and without any topical care whatsoever?
not that you need to apply a coating but you should be looking for and repairing and damaged, cracked or rotten siding, make sure flashings are intact and cleaning heavy mildew off of the surface when needed, other than that, that is really all cedar needs hopefully you can get another 35 years or more
If your going to do anything to protect it just “oil it”. Don’t put on any of the whatever is today’s “worlds best sealer” you’ll be disappointed. There’s a product called “Chevron Shake Oil” I’ve used it for years out here in the land of Western Red Cedar and you won't find it at the paint store. If you want to keep the natural look It’s the way to go.
