I have made a "stain-grade" Aspen panel board, stained it with Minwax oil based colonial maple stain and did not like the result after it was dry. I attempted cover it with a darker color "gunstock" and have not been able to. No matter how much I put the new stain on and how long I waited, it will be wiped off with only very little residue left on the board. I tried bleach, a little sanding and mineral spirit, nothing seemed to work. I am seeking help. Thank you,
that's how stain works. The first product embeds itself into the wood.
the second coat has no place to 'bite' into and gets wiped off.
try adding stain/colour to a clear coat and apply that. check manufacturer's info.
I bought the aspen from Lowes only that it looked great in the plastic wrap. And it says "ready for stain or paint".
I made more than 40 boards (raised panel ...) only to find that the stain result is too bad to tolerate . I thought about redoing it but the time and money spent is even harder to swallow.
I wish I diy-chatted with you guys three weeks ago.

Could we apply a darker gen-stain over the existing stain? Would the darker color minimize/reduce the blotchiness?
Any help would be mostly appreciated.
