Squeaking Door

Well, this is my first post here, hopefully it will lead to ending my door squeak. I have a bathroom door that squeaks when opening or closing and will also slowly swing open on its own. I've tried spraying the hinges with WD40 and also the pins. This did not fix the problem. I'm guessing now the issue is the wood around the door itself now. I can see a crack that runs along the frame of the door it seems and it seems like it gets a little wider as you open the door. Any suggestions on how to fix this issue if it is indeed this crack that is causing the noise?

Take out one hinge pin with the door shut, lay it on ugly concrete, rap it with a small hammer in the center, re-install. Be safe, GBR

So is the squeek coming from the hinges or from the wood?

I believe what GBAR is saying is to put a slight bend in a hinge pin to prevent the door from opening up on its own.

While the pin is out, put a very light coat of Vaseline on it. Put the vaseline on all the hinge pins and that will prevent them from squeeking. You need to take each pin out of the hinge to get them properly lubricated. Do one at a time so you don't have to take the door off. The vaseline will help with the squeek but will make the doors open easier. Therefore you will need to do what GBAR indicated to prevent the doors opening by themselves.

This is what worked for me.

Squeaking Door

thanks for the replies, I'll give the things everyone posted a try. Hopefully its not from the wood. I get close and try to tell exactly where its coming from when it squeaks, but its hard to tell since the crack is close to where the hinges attach to the frame. Anyone have any suggestions if I find it is the wood crack that is causing the squeak?

All depends on where the crack is. If it's in the jamb, in line with the hinge screws, it will be a little harder to fix. Not impossible! Or is it a split-jamb pre-hung door? ( The stop is solid on one side, a crack dividing on the other) Or in the casing, only cosmetic?

the crack looks to be about 14 inches long and seems to have started from the middle hinge on the door. it runs vertically right along the edge of what I would say is the doorstop (its a piece of wood that is about 1/4 inch thick maybe that the door closes to. I hope this helps you with a mental picture. I have tried tightening all the screws on all the hinges in the past to see if that would make it stop. I'm going to have to learn how to post pictures...I'm sure that would make it much easier to understand the issue. Thanks for the help =)

If it started on the middle hinge (solid core), it may not have been installed properly. Looking for the pictures......
